Grid square overlays

I am with Ventura County Auxillary Communications Service and the leader of the Rapid Repsonse Team.  One of the items that I would like to do because of the terrain in our county, is be able to overlay a grid square set so that we can have an "equipment needed list" for each of the grid areas.  For example:  say we get an emergency situation (true past case) where there is a missing person in Lake Piru.  Due to the terrain of this area, communications is very difficult.  We want to before the emergency situation, go out to all of the grids in our county and pre-determine what equipment is need for that grid square area in order to have good communications to and from.  So if grid DM04lf needs to have at leaset a 20 foot push up mast with a high gain antenna and full 50 watts on 6 meters in order to communicate, that would be able to show up on the hover text.

Is there such a grid that we can bring into Depiction for this purpose?

MGRS grid display in Depiction

Absolutely, Dan.

A quick Google search of 'MGRS grid shapefile' yielded me this page: http://earth-info.nga.mil/GandG/coordsys/gislayers/gislayers.html

The grids come as shapefiles (zip, actually). The main thing to look for is a .prj file in the set. This file is used automatically, if found, by Depiction to reproject coordinates in the shapefile to latlongs, so it can be displayed in the Depiction canvas.

I added the shapefile using the Add->File selection (element was set to be 'Auto Detect'). It took a while, but this process should be much faster in the 1.01p version we are working on (will be out before the end of the year).

When the data comes in, I am able to set the shape's fill color (set to None for better visualization), outline color, etc.

You can access the element's properties via the Manage menu choice. Choose the shapefile element you imported, click on 'View/Edit' and then click on 'Set hover text' in the 'Element Group Information' box that shows up. Here, set all the fields you want to appear upon hover. See the snapshot I have included.
